Saleyards to host annual sheep drive

Corowa district farmers are encouraged to donate sheep for the annual charity sale raising money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

The Corowa Saleyards will be bustling with activity on Monday, March 18, as local sheep producers gather for the sixth annual Sheep Drive, benefiting the Royal Children’s Hospital’s Good Friday Appeal.

The event invites local farmers to donate sheep or lambs for auction with the proceeds from the sales entirely dedicated to supporting the lifesaving work of the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.

Since its inception in 2019, the Sheep Drive has become a cornerstone event for the local community, raising more than $90,000 through the support and contributions of local farmers and the efforts of the region’s livestock agents.

Karie Playford, a sheep farmer and the local area manager for the Corowa Wahgunyah Good Friday Appeal, is once again looking forward to the big sale day.

“Despite our distance from Melbourne, so many local families have a personal connection to the Royal Children’s Hospital,” she said.

“They recognise the critical role the hospital plays in providing world-class healthcare to our children, and this understanding fuels their generous support for the Good Friday Appeal.”

The success of the Sheep Drive is enhanced by the collaborative efforts of agents and the Federation Council, who have waived commissions and yard fees for donated sheep. This gesture ensures that all funds raised from the sheep sales are directly funnelled into the Good Friday Appeal, maximising the impact of each donation.

Buyers also play a pivotal role in this charitable endeavour, often bidding generously on the charity lots.

Livestock producers interested in contributing to this cause are encouraged to contact their agents. Livestock donations will also be accepted at the sale on Monday, March 25, providing an opportunity for last-minute contributions to this commendable cause.
