A large crowd turned out for the 41st and final ram sale for the Sammon Brothers’ Majella stud at Bungeet on Friday, September 19.

Bill and Glenys Sammon are winding down their stud operation, after a long and successful stud breeding career.

The breeding of Dorset sheep began in 1963 when the first stud was registered.

A total of 92 out of 98 Poll Dorset rams were sold at auction for a top of $5600 and an average of $1916.

A highlight of the sale was the introduction of the new owners of the Majella stud, Steve and Mardi James of Bungeet, who live only about 5km away from the Sammons.

The James family runs a large prime lamb enterprise comprising about 2500 first-cross ewes.

In attendance at the sale was long-time client, the Nish family from Bundalong, who have been purchasing rams for more than 50 years.

Bill thanked his wife Glenys and son Tim who took over the running of the sale due to his hospitalisation.
