Buyers snap up Coledale rams

Penned rams at the Coledale sale.

Buyers were chasing well-bred rams backed up by data at the Coledale Poll Dorset Stud sale at Glenrowan West on September 25.

It was the second sale since the transfer of ownership to the Burton family from Wallace and Sue Binnie.

The sale saw a clearance of 77 of the 100 lots for an average of $1421,and a top price of $3000 for a sale to Broomhill Pastoral, Mansfield.

Stud principal Xavier Burton said buyers appeared to be looking for rams with high growth and were well balanced.

Prices may have been affected by a trend towards joining ewes later in the season.

“About 50 per cent of our rams are sold after Christmas,” Xavier said.

“We notice a lot of our clients are joining later, so they are not necessarily thinking about rams in the spring.”

Many of the successful bidders were return buyers from north-central and north-east Victoria.
