Shepparton felt the beat of Filipino culture, heritage and unity unfold at the Overlander Hotel on Saturday, June 7.
It was a night to remember, as Shepparton came alive in honour of the 127th Philippine Independence Day, hosted by the Filipino Australian & Friends Association.
The evening opened with a warm Acknowledgement of Country from Mayette Martin, and thanksgiving prayer, followed by stirring renditions of both national anthems.
As flags waved proudly across the room, hearts swelled with shared pride.
City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali and Cr Rod Schubert were present, recognising the Filipino community’s vital role in the region.
Adding depth to the evening, Delma Broughton delivered a powerful retelling of the history of Philippine Independence Day, and Mariola Nebiu moved the audience with a message of hope and strength.
Shepparton police’s Aboriginal community liaison officer Eric Egan joined as a guest of honour, strengthening community ties.
Host Cecilia Babano-Cash kept the vibe lively and the dance floor moving with eight spectacular showcase performances entertaining guests, ranging from traditional dances such as Pandanggo sa Ilaw and Cariñosa to contemporary hip-hop numbers.
“This wasn’t just a party, it was a powerful celebration of culture, connection, and community,” Miss Martin said.
The crowd erupted in cheers during the Search for Best in Filipina Dress and the grand Coronation Ceremony, while raffle draws brought joy to several lucky winners.
Romy Samuel’s live music kept spirits high, with dancing and singing echoing late into the evening.
Adding a heartfelt touch, FAFA awarded certificates of appreciation to Delma Broughton, Murray Broughton, Cecilia Babano-Cash and Emmie Stenhouse for their outstanding service to the community.
“We’re walking away with full hearts and so much gratitude,” a FAFA spokesperson said.
“To every guest, performer and volunteer — thank you for making this a night we’ll never forget.”
