This year, Education Week’s theme of Celebration of Cultures provides an invaluable opportunity to highlight the diversity and inclusivity that make Banmira Specialist School a special place for students and staff.
The school is incredibly fortunate to have various backgrounds and cultures within its community, as well as a wide range of learning, sensory, physical and communication needs.
Education Week will be a time to celebrate the unique achievements and strengths of its students, staff and wider community.
Students across both campuses and all-year levels will join in on different culturally themed activities throughout the week of Monday, May 19.
An interactive world map will be made at each campus where students can mark their family heritage or place they would like to visit using a large symbol, flag or photo.
This provides a visually engaging way for students to learn about geography and share their cultural backgrounds with classmates.
Once complete, this large map will be displayed in the front office for all the school community to admire.
Classrooms will also enjoy various cultural craft activities – modified and personalised for all abilities – including Aboriginal dot art, Chinese fans, African beaded necklaces and mosaic flags.
Visual support, sensory aids, and communication support will enable everyone to participate and celebrate.
“At Banmira Specialist School, we’re proud of the different backgrounds, cultures and stories that make up our school community,” principal Jesse Whittaker said.
“Education Week is a great chance to celebrate everyone’s uniqueness in fun, inclusive ways that everyone can take part in, no matter their abilities.
“It’s all about coming together and recognising what makes our school such a great place to learn and grow.”
