Mohamed Toure's bid to lead the line at the World Cup is back on track after the breakout Socceroo returned unscathed from injury.

Harry Souttar is also well and truly on the comeback trail from his long lay-off at Leicester City.

Toure suffered a groin injury in late February which ruled him out of Australia's send-off friendlies against Cameroon and Curacao.

The young striker, who turned 22 last week, returned off the bench for Norwich City in English soccer's second-tier on Friday (Saturday AEDT), coming on in the 63rd minute in a 1-1 draw with Portsmouth.

The timing couldn't be better for Toure, who now has a solid two-month lead-in to Australia's opening game against Turkey in Vancouver on June 13.

Norwich are nine points outside the playoff places with six games remaining.

The former Adelaide United attacker will hope to recapture the form that made him the most talked about man in the Championship before injury.

Toure had scored four goals and notched an assist in his five matches since sealing a January move from Danish club Randers.

The dynamic striker looms as Tony Popovic's potential first-choice striker come the World Cup finals, provided he can stay fit and firing.

Toure scored two goals and notched an assist across two friendlies against New Zealand last September.

Deni Juric led the line in the March friendlies but went goalless, while Nicholas D'Agostino is still injured and Mitch Duke has been out of favour.

Duke scored a brace and notched an assist for Macarthur against Newcastle on Thursday night to reignite his own selection bid.

Meanwhile Souttar, who had knee surgery after recovering from his torn Achilles, has been building fitness at Leicester.

The towering defender played a half in an internal fixture with the Foxes.

"Harry Souttar is playing in a game as we speak and I think got through 45 minutes," Leicester manager Gary Rowett said.

"Again, he's making good steps towards making a return at some point. He's been out for a long time."
