Seven years ago, Como were playing in the fourth division of Italian soccer. Next season they will be competing in Europe for the first time in their 119-year history - and that could even be the Champions League.

Como won 1-0 at Hellas Verona in Serie A on Sunday (Monday AEST) to guarantee a spot in at least the Conference League because they can't finish lower than sixth. Anastasios Douvikas scored for Como.

The result also left Como just two points behind fourth-placed AC Milan and Roma. Milan lost 3-2 at home to Atalanta, while Roma snatched a dramatic 3-2 win at Parma.

There are two rounds remaining in Serie A after this weekend.

European soccer could prove enough to keep coach Cesc Fabregas at the club, with bigger teams across Europe reportedly interested in the 39-year-old, who has impressed in his first managerial position.

Elsewhere, Jamie Vardy's first goal since January set Cremonese on their way to a vital 3-0 win over bottom club Pisa, who played most of the second half with nine men.

Fiorentina and Genoa are both now mathematically safe after playing out a 0-0 draw.

In Germany, Union Berlin's Marie-Louise Eta became the first female head coach to win a game in European soccer's top five men's leagues as she oversaw a 3-1 victory against Mainz in the Bundesliga.

Goals from Oliver Burke in the 88th minute and Josip Juranovic in stoppage time turned a probable draw into a win to move Union up to 12th in the Bundesliga table. Earlier, Mainz's Sheraldo Becker had scored to cancel out Andrej Ilic's opener for Union.

It was the first win for Union since March and came in Eta's fourth game since taking over when the club fired Steffen Baumgart last month. She had one draw and two losses before Sunday's win.

Eta's time as head coach of the Union men's team is due to end next week when Union hosts Augsburg in their last game of the season. She has already agreed to take charge of the Union women's team for next season.

Two goals from Igor Matanovic were not enough to stop Europa League finalists Freiburg losing 3-2 at Hamburger SV.

The loss is a blow to seventh-place Freiburg's hopes of qualifying for the Conference League via the Bundesliga.

Freiburg could yet end up in the Champions League with a win over Aston Villa in the final of the Europa League on May 20. Hamburg moved up one spot to 11th place.
