Three men have been charged with the murder of a 48-year-old man at a bus interchange after he died in hospital.

Martin Wiberg was assaulted at Casuarina in Darwin on March 12 and died of his injuries two months later.

Following his death, Northern Territory Police said the Director of Public Prosecutions had accepted an application to have charges against the three accused men upgraded from aggravated assault to murder.

Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Morrissey said the victim's family remained at the forefront of investigators' minds.

''Our thoughts remain with the family and loved ones of this man as they continue to endure an unimaginable loss,'' he said in a statement.

''This was a vicious attack and the level of violence displayed was reprehensible and has no place in our community.''

Mr Wiberg was allegedly assaulted and had his head stomped on, rendering him unconscious.

Two men, aged 26 and 31, are due to appear before Darwin Local Court on Wednesday and a 19-year-old man is due to appear in the same court on August 12.
