Fundamentals at Dairy SA event

A Dairy SA workshop will provide dairy farmers with the fundamentals to good nutrition.

The two two-day workshops will focus on allowing producers to examine whether their cows are being fed in the most economic way; determining the right mix of pasture, forages, crops and supplementary feeds; and discovering how nutritional outcomes can be maximised with available feed systems.

This two-day Nutrition Fundamentals workshop will focus on maximising homegrown feed, and using supplements in the most cost-effective way to fill any feed gaps.

Presented by dairy nutritionist and extension consultant Jo Crosby and Total Results Ag Consulting dairy productivity consultant Mikaela Baker, it is suitable for dairy farmers, farm employees and dairy service providers with little or no experience of dairy cow nutrition and others wishing to refresh their knowledge.

It aims to improve participants’ knowledge and skills so that they can confidently make informed, cost-effective, on-farm nutrition decisions that match their farming system and plans.

The workshop will cover the following:

● The importance of getting nutrition right.

● Ruminant digestion and factors that limit intake.

● Nutrients supplied by different feeds.

● Balancing the diet.

● Condition scoring.

● The cost of rearing young stock.

● Feed budgeting.

● Comparing cost of nutrients.
